LiDAR scanning

Stavanger Drone provides LiDAR drone surveys and laser scanning across Rogaland, Norway. The Zenmuse L2 captures up to 240,000 points per second and reads the ground beneath dense vegetation — classified point clouds, terrain models and corridor profiles at 4 cm vertical accuracy.

LiDAR or photogrammetry — which should you choose?

Photogrammetry builds models from overlapping photos and produces photorealistic orthophotos and 3D — ideal on open surfaces, but the camera only sees the surface. Laser scanning fires thousands of pulses per second, and enough of them reach the ground between the branches to model the terrain beneath the vegetation. On many jobs we combine both from the same flight: LiDAR for the terrain, photogrammetry for visual documentation.

What is a point cloud?

A point cloud is millions of measured points with three-dimensional coordinates — the raw material behind terrain models and profiles. We deliver the point cloud classified: every point is categorised as ground, vegetation or buildings, so a clean terrain model (DTM) can be extracted beneath the vegetation. The format is LAS/LAZ, ready for design work and GIS.

Corridors, forest and overgrown sites

LiDAR is the first choice for corridor mapping along roads, rail and power lines, terrain modelling in forest and brush, forestry surveys with vegetation height and volume, and volume measurement on extraction sites where vegetation has taken over. Where photogrammetry stops, the laser keeps reading.

What you get

  • 01Point cloud in LAS/LAZ — classified (ground/vegetation/buildings)
  • 02DTM beneath vegetation
  • 03Corridor profile for road, rail or power line
  • 04Vegetation height and volume
  • 05Written report

Use cases

  • Terrain modelling in forest and brush
  • Corridor mapping — road, rail, power line
  • Forestry surveying and vegetation analysis
  • Volumes on overgrown extraction sites

Equipment & accuracy

DJI Matrice 350 RTK + Zenmuse L2. Up to 240,000 points/s, up to 5 returns per pulse. Vertical accuracy 4 cm, horizontal 5 cm.

We run LiDAR scans across all of Rogaland — from corridors along the E39 to forest terrain in Ryfylke — with a typical response time of 24–48 hours.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between LiDAR and photogrammetry?

Photogrammetry builds models from overlapping photos and gives photorealistic orthophotos and 3D — but only sees what the camera sees. LiDAR fires laser pulses that penetrate vegetation and read the actual ground. We recommend the method based on your terrain and purpose.

How accurate is drone LiDAR?

The Zenmuse L2 delivers 4 cm vertical and 5 cm horizontal accuracy, capturing up to 240,000 points per second with up to 5 returns per pulse.

When should I choose LiDAR over standard drone mapping?

Choose LiDAR when the area has forest, brush or other vegetation hiding the ground — terrain modelling in forest, corridor mapping along roads and power lines, or volumes on overgrown extraction sites.

What is a classified point cloud?

A point cloud where every point is categorised as ground, vegetation or buildings. That makes it possible to extract a clean terrain model (DTM) beneath the vegetation and analyse vegetation height and volume.

Which formats is LiDAR data delivered in?

Classified point cloud in LAS/LAZ, terrain model (DTM), corridor profiles and a written report — ready for design work and GIS.

What does a LiDAR drone survey cost?

The price depends on the area, required point density, terrain complexity and which products you need from the point cloud. Describe the area and the purpose and you'll get a concrete quote — usually within one business day.
